Denver Open Media has selected six development partners - including channelAustin - to participate in the Open Media Project. "The partners will play an integral part in the successful deployment of the Open Media System. Selecting these six locations is a major milestone in the formation of a nation-wide user-driven network of public access television stations and community technology centers. We are all thrilled to have such an amazing group of stations dedicated to the success of the Open Media Project," said Tony Shawcross, Executive Director of Denver Open Media.
Beginning January 2009, Access Humboldt, Amherst Community Television, Boston Neighborhood Network, channelAustin, Portland Community Media and Urbana Public Television will receive consulting and training services for the implementation of the Open Media System. In addition to receiving implementation services, these initial sites will be directly involved in the ongoing development of the tool set.
The Open Media Project is aimed helping public access television stations and community technology centers better cooperate as a nation-wide user-driven network. The Open Media System will enable public access television stations and community technology centers to use a suite of tools enable the transfer of video between their web site and TV station. At the core of the project is the creation and implementation of open-source tools developed by Denver Open Media and others aimed at expanding and streamlining the role of the community in the workload of a public access station or community technology center. Together, public access television and community technology centers can engage communities in new media platforms.
In May 2008, Denver Open Media was awarded a $380,000 Knight News Challenge grant to fund the Open Media Project. Since that time, Denver Open Media has worked on the development of the Open Media Project tool set. Throughout 2009, Denver Open Media will continue development and integration of the tools as they are implemented in various environments. Denver Open Media will continue working with other development efforts to have a complete install profile ready for widespread use by the end of 2009.
